INTERVENTION IN SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS: A RANDOMIZED STUDY COMPARING TWO THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

Abstract

Demonstrating the efficacy, effectiveness and efficiency of intervention in speech sounds disorders (SSD) has been a challenge for researchers in the field especially because several aspects are involved in the intervention process. Some of the most cited in the literature are: frequency, duration, and amount of time of intervention; type of intervention (directed by the child or by the therapist); assessment in group or individually; criteria for the selction of the target sound; number of times that the target is addressed in the session and the intervention approach. In our clinical practice in the Phonology Research Laboratory from the Department of Physiotherapy, Speech-Language and Hearing Therapy and Occupational Therapy of the Medical School of the University of Sao Paulo we have been applying two intervention approaches: the adapted cycle model and the phonological stimulation program. The two approaches favor the interrelation among perception, oro-motor production and cognitive-linguistic processing. This study also intends to demonstrate to the speech-language pathologist that the use of biofeedback at the intervention can be helpful to assist the child to produce speech sounds that involve more complex movements and require higher articulatory precision. The main purpose of the study is to compare the phonological stimulation program approach and the adapted cycles approach in a randomized study, controlling the sessions frequency. Participants of the study will be 40 children with SSD diagnosed in the Phonology Research Lab aged between 5:00 and 8:11 years. Children will be randomly allocated into four groups, with eight children in each one. The fifth group will be of children who have difficulty in adjusting to the schedule of the sessions and will be used as the control group. The study will be blind, since the therapist will not know the variables of the study. (AU)
