Abstract

The demand for battery-powered portable devices such as PDAs, cell phones, MP3 players and many others is growing fast. At each new generation of these products, the complexity of integrated circuits is getting higher, and also the power consumption. The methods used for estimating power currently used do not fit the industry needs, as they are located at lower levels of abstraction and their precision is much limited. This proposal presents the problem of the increasing of power consumption and its influence to the market. A brief survey in the area is also presented. The main goal of this PhD project is the creation of a methodology that enables the power analysis of heterogeneous SoCs (composed of several distinct devices). This methodology and its related models will allow a better evaluation of the impact of hardware and software components of the SoCs in power/energy, as well opening opportunities for optimization of the system as whole.
