Abstract

Nociceptive threshold of humans during wake and sleep will be investigated by means of the laser evoked potential technique. During a polysomnographic examination, twenty healthy adult volunteers will be stimulated on the dorsum of the hand using brief laser pulses, delivered by an automatic device that varies intensity and point of incidence, according to a pre-programmed protocol. Biomedical signal processing techniques will be applied to the off-line recordings in order to calculate the evoked potential and provide an estimation of the nociceptive threshold during sleep stages. Results will help to elucidate the effects of nociceptive stimulation on polysomnographic parameters.
