Abstract

In this project we will analyze, in a mathematically rigorous way, a distributed optimal control problem modeling a situation in which one tries to cotrol a mosquito population in a certain region by using insecticide applied by a moving spreading unit. The intention is to characterize an optimal trajectory to be followed by this unit in order to minimize a certain functional that tries at the same time reduce the mosquito population and the operational costs of the spreading unit,Thus, we have an optimal control problem with a restriction given by a partial differential equation governing the mosquito population growth and dissemination in the region. We will try to prove the existence of optimal solutions, as well as characterizing them by finding their corresponding first order optimality conditions and associated Pontriagyn maximum principle. This will be done by the Dubovitskii and Milyutin methodology, which is based on the sepation of certain cones associated both to the functional to be minimized and the restriction of the problem.
