Abstract

Komaroviquinone, a diterpene that was recently isolated from the plant Dracocephalum komarovi, is a potent candidate in studies towards the treatment of Chagas disease, an important disease for Brazil. Komaroviquinone showed itself more active against T. cruzi (IC50= 9 nano molar) when compared to currently used drugs to treat Chagas disease and its mechanism of action is closely related to the T. cruzi old yellow enzyme (TcOYE), found in the parasite. This project deals with the synthesis of racemic komaroviquinone, employing an epoxide ring opening reaction and an intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation as the key steps in the route to be studied.
