Abstract

This study aims: (1) to evaluate in vivo the reproducibility and validity of QLF and DIAGNOdent pen in detecting caries lesions activity on occlusal surface of primary molars and to test the association between caries activity and the presence of red fluorescent bacterial plaque; (2) to evaluate in vivo the validity of QLF and DIAGNOdent pen in relation to caries activity in primary molars; (3) to evaluate the influence of red fluorescent biofilm as predictor of caries in erupting first permanent molars. For the aim (1), one hundred fifty children between 3 and 9 years old, presenting at least one primary molar, will be selected. They will be examined for the presence of plaque and bleeding, caries experience and evaluation of red fluorescent biofilm with the QLF. In a second session, the teeth will be reevaluated in relation to caries activity using the ICDAS II, QLF and DIAGNOdent pen. The validation of these methods will be made by consensus of the investigators using the ICDAS II. For the aim (2), from sample of first objective, 50 extracted or exfoliated teeth will be sectioned and histologically validated using pH indicator dye. Finally, for the aim (3), one hundred children presenting at least one first permanent molar eruption without caries will be selected. The same clinical parameters of the protocol I will be evaluated. After one week, the QLF and DIAGNOdent pen will be employed for evaluation of red fluorescent biofilm and the loss of fluorescence observed. The children will be followed-up at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after the initial clinical examination.
