Abstract

This research project seeks to deepen the study of noise control systems on applications related to the automotive industry, including the traditional guidelines of active noise control and active structural acoustic control and, in an innovative way, to prove the design concepts by determining its impact on relevant psycho-acoustic metrics such as Zwicker Loudness, Roughness, Tonality and Sharpness. The challenges reside in the definition of the temporal and spectral attributes of the acoustic stimuli that are responsible for the undesired characteristic on the sound field, which will be identified from the analysis of recorded or synthesized sounds samples. As far as simulation is concerned, it is essential to use a model that provides psycho-acoustic features that are equivalent to those of the application in view, as well as a framework that allows the inclusion of control systems and the selected metrics. Simulations in time domain are common in control systems' evaluation, which motivates the use of this type of platform for the stated purposes This project includes the construction of a theoretical basis including, a.o., classical control theory, signal processing, acoustics, psycho-acoustics and vibrations, to determine the key parameters in the control system design. This project will make extensive use of computational tools for simulation and analysis, incorporating the areas of control systems design and psycho-acoustics. Yet, the systems selected at the design stage will be experimentally validated on a vehicle mock-up allowing, not only a critical analysis of the controller performance based on psycho-acoustics, but also on the design methodology itself.
