This research project considers the theoretical analysis and computational implementation of a variable neighborhood algorithm, commonly called VNS algorithm (Variable Niegborhood Search), applied to the problem of the optimal expansion planning of distribution systems. The VNS metaheuristic has been successfully applied to the optimization of complex problems in operational research problems, but the application of this optimization technique to solve complex problems in the planning of power systems is nonexistent. To implement effectively the VNS algorithm, it is necessary to implement an efficient algorithm to solve nonlinear optimization problems. The aim is to develop an algorithm capable of solving large-scale problems.
