Abstract

Introduction: The progression of clinical and gait parameters, occurrence of falls and level of physical activity has not been jointly examined in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Data of this nature can serve as important tool in order to optimize the design of pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Objective: To analyze the progression of impairments on gait, clinical parameters, and the occurrence of falls in patients with idiopathic PD over a period of two years, considering the level of physical activity as intervenient factor. Method: Participants will include patients with PD, rated between stages 1 and 3 on Hoehn & Yahr, and healthy elderly with age, gender and similar anthropometric characteristics. The experimental design will include assessment in 3 moments (Baseline, Follow-up 1 and Follow Up 2), with an interval of one year between each two moments. Initially, patients will be clinically evaluated by a neuropsychiatrist doctor and then both groups will undergo assessment of locomotor behavior (kinematic and kinetic analysis of the task of free walking and obstacle avoidance), the occurrence of falls (prospective method ), and level of physical activity (pedometer use). Statistical analysis will include ANOVAs, MANOVAs, Friedman test, ANCOVAs and Pearson correlation and Spearman tests.
