Abstract

The sheep production has been grown in recent years in Brazil, however, there is still a big market for sheep meat. Animal feed represent an important cost of production. Co-products of the textile industry (whole cottonseed, meal and cottonseed meal) stands out as an alternative source of protein and energy, which could reduce the cost of the diet of the animals. These products feature high amounts of fatty acids, which may provide greater deposition of carcass fat, increased weight gain and better meat quality. However, a limitation for using these products in animal nutrition is the presence of high amounts of gossypol. This substance is toxic to animals and present reproductive effects, especially in young animals. However, the reproductive effects of gossypol in ruminants is a topic of considerable controversy and too little is known about the effect of gossypol in lambs, specifically. Thus, this project aims to evaluate the influence of supplementation with co-products of cotton on reproductive system of lambs during puberty. (AU)
