Abstract

The impact caused by the chemotherapics and antimicrobians use in animal production has been studied in the last few years. Data such as environmental degradation, high costs for the producer, rising of resistant cepa to the active principles and residues in the meat are among the most common findings. The same is found in fish farming. The fish handling causes high level of stress and damage the immune function in fish. To avoid the appearance of diseases, the producers use antibiotics in the feed and in the water. Substances known as immunostimulant enhance the immune responses of fish. These substances can decrease or even avoid the use of chemotherapics in fish production. The aim of this research is to compare the utilization of an antimicrobian (Oxytetracycline) and an immunostimulant (²-glucan) in tilapia feeding in net cages. Zoothecnical (growth, weight gain and condition factor), physiological (blood glucose, cortisol, total protein levels, blood cells counting, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and hematimetric indices) and immune (lysozyme, complement and leukocyte respiratory activity) indicators and residue depletion in water and meat will be determined. The appropriate alternatives development in fish farming might help to reduce costs regarding the quality of final product and also reduce the indiscriminate use of antimicrobians and chemotherapics in fish productive chain besides to prevent environmental impacts and high costs.
