Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify and relate the determinant factors (coping and social support) of the Burnout Syndrome in dental students. The volunteers participating in the study will be undergraduate students enrolled in 2011 in the Dentistry course at the Faculty of Dentistry of Southeastern Brazil. To characterize the population under study, socio-demographic information will be used. To identify the Burnout syndrome, the Maslach Burnout Inventory will be used (MBI-SS). The coping capacity of the individuals will also be examined in relation to their problems and their perceptions and satisfaction regarding their social support. For this we will use the following scales: the Brief Cope, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and the Satisfaction and Social Support Scale(SSSS). A descriptive statistics will be performed. The data collected from the different measuring instruments and their key dimensions will be included in a structural equation model (SEM), with the Burnout as the central construct. The comparison between groups, demarcated by the socio-demographic variables of interest, will be performed after analyzing the assumptions. If these are met, parametric tests will be used (Student t test for two groups and the analysis of variance for three or more groups), otherwise the non- parametrics will be used (Mann Whitney test for two groups and Kruskall Wallis for three or more groups). For decision making, the 5% level of significance will be used.
