Abstract

Abnormalities of number of the lateral incisor are very common in patients with complete cleft lip and palate. Several studies in the literature report the frequent occurrence of hypodontia of the lateral incisor in patients with complete cleft lip and palate. Previous studies conducted at our institution analyzed the occurrence hypodontia and hyperdontia of the deciduous and permanent lateral incisor in patients with different types of cleft lip and palate; however, the recurrence of abnormalities of number of the lateral incisor has never been analyzed in longitudinal studies. This study will investigate the prevalence of abnormalities of number of the lateral incisor in patients with complete cleft lip and palate, by evaluation of panoramic radiographs and periapical radiographs of the cleft area obtained from patients at different periods, to compare the recurrence of these alterations in the deciduous and permanent dentition. This knowledge will allow the counseling and proper guidance based on scientific evidence for the parents, who are concerned about the possibility of hypodontia of the permanent lateral incisor at early ages, which often leads to unnecessary radiographic exposure.
