Abstract

Contrarily to results from laboratories elsewhere in US and Japan, data from our laboratory demonstrated in the 1990 decade that domestic dogs do not develop resistance against the brown dog Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick following repeated infestations or even after challenge infestation post-vaccination with crude tick extract. More recently, a comparative study between two populations of R. sanguineus from Brazil and Argentina showed marked biological, morphological and genetic differences between them; the Brazilian lineage seemed to be more phylogenetically related to the African R. turanicus while the Argentinean one seemed to be closest to the R. sanguineus from Europe; this explains at least partially the differences related above on the acquisition of resistance in dogs to this tick species. Continuing this line of research, we aim to investigate in a comparative way the possible resistance development in dogs after three successive and controlled infestations by adult R. sanguineus ticks, Jaboticabal lineage, Brazil, and Rafaela lineage, Argentina, through biological parameters determination, tick bite lesion's histopathology and serum antibody titration in each infestation.
