Abstract

Brazilian Purpuric Fever (BPF) is a fulminant pediatric disease characterized by conjunctivitis, fever, purpura, hypotensive shock and death. The illness is caused by Haemophilus influenzae biotype aegyptius (Hae), a bacterium which was formerly associated with only self-limited purulent conjunctivitis. The virulence factors of Hae are not yet fully known. BPF has been detected in Brazil, Australia and in one case at the United States and currently it is considered quelled. However, it is possible that cases have been (and still are) omitted and not diagnosed properly. Since BPF presents high rate of mortality and a relatively "new" pathogen, studies aiming prophylactic measures and a greater awareness of Hae are important. Therefore, this study proposes a better understanding of the virulence of this pathogen through the genome sequencing of Hae strains, the expression analysis of candidate genes for virulence in vitro and in vivo and the characterization of Hae's lipids.
