Abstract

The quantum character of the correlations shared between different parts of a composed system has attracted much attention since the conception, by Schrödinger, of his famous cat and of the critic to quantum mechanics by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen. Recently, this issue has received special attention due to the discovery that separable states may present nonclassical correlations other than entanglement. Based on a gap between the quantum and the classical versions of the information theory, it was proposed the first measure for such correlations, the so called quantum discord. This project deals with the study of such correlations – as well as its classical counterpart – both from the fundamental and technological application point of view. Beyond the quantification and characterization of such correlations, the study of their decoherent dynamics under the action of the environment is also an objective of this project. The inclusion of relativistic effects in its dynamics as well as the applications to other branches of physics like thermodynamics and quantum phase transitions will also be of great interest. It is important to note that, besides the theoretical developments, this project also includes the experimental investigation of the behavior of such correlations, with the main focus on the nuclear magnetic resonance context.
