Abstract

Because of the important relationship between carbohydrate and protein diet, microbiota and fermentation products in the gut, gut immunity and systemic immunity, this topic has received attention in recent years. Nothing about this subject was found for older dogs, but it is possible that manipulating the microbiota and intestinal fermentation products can be diminish the phenomenon of immunosenescence, as documented in dogs. We will study the effects of age and sources of protein and carbohydrate composition of the fecal microbiota, fermentation products, digestibility of food, intestinal mucosa morphology and immunological parameters of the dogs. The test will follow a 3x2 factorial arrangement with three diets and two ages, generating six experimental treatments. Are employed three blocks of 12 dogs, six adult dogs (4 to 6) and six elderly (> 11 years) in each block and two replicates per treatment in each block in six replication (dogs) per treatment. The experimental diets are: diet with insoluble fiber based on sugar cane and flour chicken viscera (SC); diet with 30% of soybean meal (SBM), replacing flour chicken viscera; diet with soluble fermentable fiber based on beet pulp (BeP). Each block was structured as: nutrient digestibility (on days 10th to 15th); products of fermentation and fecal pH (on days 16th, 17th and 18th); the fecal microbiota (on day 21st and 22nd); stool IgA (on days 27th, 28th and 29th); immunological blood parameters (on day 30th); and on the intestinal mucosa histology (days 31st and 32nd). The data will be evaluated by analysis of variance by the GLM procedure of SAS, considering the effects of block, diet and animal and their interactions. Averages are compared by Tukey test (p <0,05). (AU)
