Abstract

Luminescent materials or phosphors have wide potential application in emission devices in general and in the biological area, due to its ability to convert energy. Complexes of lanthanide ions by having appropriate properties has been highlighted in the preparation of biological markers, and in general these properties are attributed to intramolecular energy transfer from the ligand to the lanthanide ion, known as "antenna effect". The incorporation of lanthanide ion complexes in silica gel networks leads to the formation of organic-inorganic hybrid materials, which are divided into two classes according to the type of interaction between the organic and inorganic, whereas sol gel method is the most used for their synthesis. These hybrid materials exhibit the properties necessary to conjugate biomolecules, i.e., production of a stable bonding between the matrix and the biomolecules maintaining the specific features of the surface species. Markers using the up-conversion process present some advantages in comparison with those of down-conversion. Er3+ shows both type of processes, where the former is more sensitive to the presence of energy disperser centers, which can be minimized by an indirect excitation of the matrix or by adding a sensitizer, e.g., Yb3+. Thus, the aim of this project is the investigation of hybrid organic-inorganic compounds containing Er3+ in the presence or absence of sensitizing Yb3+ complexed with ligands of Schiff's Base type supported in silica gel network in order to study its feasibility as luminescent markers in immunoassays. It is also aimed further studies of the conjugation between suitable hybrids and albumin or streptavidin, using cross-linking reagents (glutaraldehyde or EDC) with appropriate protocols. (AU)
