Abstract

Parkinson disease is a neurodegenerative pathology dependent on environmental and genetic components. Among its genetic features there is the SNCA gene, which encodes the pro-oxidant protein alpha-synuclein, whose accumulation leads to lipotoxicity and to oxidative stress in neurons, characterized by the increment of the free radical production by mitochondria. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a useful model organism for studying the effects of genetic mutations related to several neurologic disturbances and encephalomyopathy, as for associated therapies. This work aims to study yeasts expressing SNCA gene variants as a Parkinson reliable model and the possible effects of the use of endogenous antioxidants, like melatonin. (AU)
