Abstract

Zone trapping with merging zones will be investigated as an alternative approach in flow analysis involving relatively slow chemical reactions. In this proposal, the sample and reagent solution are simultaneously inserted into convergent carrier streams and the established zones coalesce at the point of confluence, and thereafter are maintained under static conditions inside either the main reactor or the detector. To this end, commuting facilities are important. The main characteristics, potentialities and limitations of the proposal will be compared in relation to the zone stopping approach with merging zones. A model system involving the spectrophotometric determination of nitrite in natural waters will be designed, and the possibilities for trapping the sample zones inside several parallel reactors or inside the the detector, correcting for carry-over, compensating the Schlieren effect and minimizing the reagent consumption will be critically evaluated. One expects to improve performance of the flow system, especially analytical sensitivity, in relation to methods exploiting relatively slow reactions. As applications, procedures will be developed for spectrophotometric determinations of cobalt in grasses, thiobarbituric acid in foodstuffs, chlorophenol and vanadium in natural waters.
