Abstract

Recent work has demonstrated the advantages of exploiting pulsed rather than laminar flows for flow-based chemical analyses. This has not been investigated in relation to procedures involving immobilization of chemical species in liquid membranes or in the walls of open tubular reactors. It is intended therefore a comparative study of flow systems exploiting laminar or pulsed flows in relation to liquid-liquid extraction in immobilized organic phase (SLME, supported liquid membrane extraction) and solid reagents impregnated on the inner wall of a tubular reactor. To this end, the organic solvent chloroform and the crystalline MnO2 (s) will be considered. After assimilation of the immobilization techniques and the comparison of model analyzers, analytical procedures for determinations of agronomical, pharmaceutical and / or environmental relevance will be developed. Initially, focus will be placed on the spectrophotometric determinations of caffeine in food (including coffee) exploiting SLME and of ascorbic acid in soft drinks and pharmaceutical formulations using MnO2 (s). The feasibility of designing advanced flow systems for the spectrophotometric determinations of phosphate in natural waters and metals in plant materials using SLME and MnO2 (s) will be further investigated.
