Abstract

The common protein sources of dog food are mainly animal by-products meals. These ingredients may have a compromised digestibility. The present study will evaluate the use of papain as an enzymatic supplement in extruded dog diets regarding nutrient digestibility, fecal quality and production, and food palatability. Dog food will be formulated with poultry by-product meal, meat and bone meal, and feather meal as protein sources. These formulae will be unfolded into three diets: control, without enzymes; addition of 855,000UI/kg of papain; addition of 2,280,000UI/kg of papain. Each food will be fed to six dogs, in a block design with two blocks of 9 dogs. Data will be evaluated by variance analysis and polynomial contrasts (P<0.05).(AU)
