Alexandre Dumas: from the feulleton to the 'string booklet': cultural translation and editorial communication

Abstract

This project will follow the movement of cultural translation and permanence of Alexandre Dumas' work in Brazil, in a process that extends throughout the 20th century, passing by editorial circuits and results that range from the popular/popularizing edition to the cordel ("string booklet"), to the luxury edition (in recent years) and to the didactic edition. The last editorial format provides evidence that the author's main novels are used by public schools in the State of São Paulo, in reading activities in Portuguese classes. The theoretical framework will nave contributions from studies in the areas of communication, literature, education, edition, reading and cultural history. The highlights are the work "Alexandre Dumas: Thomme de 100 têtes" (2008) by Charles Grivel; texts written by Jean-Ives Mollier, Jacques Migozzi, among others, which are part of the collection "De l'écrit à l'écran" (2000) and approach themes such as popular literature, cultural history and transmedia narratives; works by Jerusa Pires Ferreira on publishing houses, popular editions, reading, adaptive processes, like "Cultura das Bordas" (2010), "O Livro de São Cipriano" (2002) and "Cavalaria em Cordel" (1993); "Folhetim" (1996), by Marlyse Meyer, and other texts written by the author. Thus, the set of editions of this author's work, which has achieved great repercussion among us, deserves to be explored in order to explain, among other aspects, the reach of the reading of his work in Brazil and the partial construction of a chapter of the history of the high circulation edition in the country, an investigation that still needs to be undertaken.
