Abstract

Conducting polymers have been investigated over 35 years and many fundamental aspects of their properties have no general explanation. Among them, the electrochemical behavior and its stability must be understand to build efficient electrochemical devices, such as batteries, solar cells and electrochromic cells. From a different point of view, although we can not understand this properties an improvement in the electrochemical behavior has been observed for self-doped materials, i.e., the ion intercalation necessary during the redox reactions are in the polymeric backbone. The problem with these self-doped polymers is the monomer price. A possible solution to obtain self-doped polymers with low cost is to use a self-assembled preparation method. In this case, to obtain a self-assembled self-doped film, the second layer must has the necessary counter ions to dope the first one. Following this reasoning, the main purpose of this research is to prepare and investigate the electrochemical properties of self-assembled films from poly(o-methoxyaniline) and poly( 3-thiopheneacetic acid) which present also a self-doped behavior. This investigation aims at also to prepare electrodes for electrochemical devices such as batteries and electrochromic cells. The research will be conducted using mainly electrochemical techniques such as chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. Many of them will be also coupled to a second technique, such as Visible spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance. Besides, the electrochemical stability will investigated using the techniques described above to improve the number of electrochemical cycles and, as consequence, build efficient long term electrochemical devices.
