Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used for microbial control and the local treatment of tumors with very favorable results. Limitations are found in both applications, and one of the strategies is the development of new photosensitizers which are more suitable and efficient for each application. The main objective of this study is the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of the efficiency of new photosensitizers for PDT. The work is a result of a partnership between the Department of Chemistry, the Federal University of São Carlos and the Institute of Physics of São Carlos in the development of a multidisciplinary study. Experiments in microorganisms and mammalian cells will be performed by using the new synthesized chlorin and bacteriochlorin derivatives. The evaluation will be based on the photodynamic efficiency in the production of reactive species, and action in biological systems. This study has the potential to improve our understanding of the influence of chemical structure on biological activity, and the type of photosensitizer to be most appropriate of the cell types to be investigated.
