Abstract

It has been suggested that Dental Compression Syndrome (DCS) may be the cause of many problems that affect the stomatognathic system, such as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, little research exists on the effects of DCS on teeth and the periodontium. The aim of this study is to identify the presence of dental and periodontal alterations in patients with bruxism and dental clenching. A sample of e150 students of the Integrated Clinic course of the Dentistry School of Araçatuba will be analyzed. The research will consist of a self-reported questionnaire and a clinical assessment. Participants will be examined and interviewed by a trained dentist. The following parameters will be registered: a) personal information, b) self-reported questionnaire to detect bruxism and clenching, c) TMD (RDC/TMD) diagnostic, d) clinical exam of teeth and periodontium, e) localization and severity of wear facets, and f) functional analysis of occlusion. After data collection, the population will be divided into a DCS group and a control group and submitted to statistical analysis using SPSS 16.0 at ±=0.05.(AU)
