Thin porcelain veneers cemented on unprepared teeth: prospective, blind, longitudinal clinical study about the influence on the integrity, shape and position of the gingival margin

Introduction: The use of porcelain veneers cemented over teeth with adequate support in enamel show survival rates of 82.93% after 20 years. The high success rate in addition with technological developments in materials and techniques have allowed the use of porcelain veneers with a minimum thickness (0.2 mm) on teeth without tooth preparation, whose influence on the gingival margin is not established. Objective: To evaluate the influence of very thin porcelain veneers (0.2 mm of thickness), cemented on the unprepared anterior teeth, on the behavior (integrity, shape and position) of the gingival margin, through a longitudinal, prospective, blinded clinical study. Materials and methods: 66 maxillary anterior teeth restored with thin porcelain veneer, with cervical margin of 0.2 mm, without tooth preparation will be evaluated in different times. The factor of the study is the time (T) on 6 levels (baseline prior to treatment, T0 (7 days after cementation), T1 (15 days), T2 (30 days), T3 (60 days) T4 (120 days), and T5 (180 days after cementation)). The variables of response are gingival index, plaque index, and gingival recession. Lateral, homologous or antagonist teeth will be the control group. Prior to restorative procedure, the teeth to be restored will undergo clinical evaluation using an automated periodontal probe type Florida, repeat 6 times for each period of analysis. Digital photographs will be taken with digital camera SLRD and 100mm macro lens with standardization of focal length, lighting, and white balance, in an orthostatic view, for each tooth in each time. Results: After the descriptive analysis of the results, the assumptions of normality and homogeneity, whereas the application of ANOVA will be verified. If the assumptions will be not met, it is predicted the use of Kruskal-Wallis test, according to related literature. The level of significance for the difference between the average is 5%. (AU)
