Dating of popular expressions in Juó Bananére's work: support for the diachronic study of Brazilian Portuguese Language

Abstract

This project aims to perform a dating of the popular expressions of the Brazilian Portuguese commonly used at the first decades of the twentieth century. These expressions can be found at "Cartas de Abax'o Piques" (1911-1918), which were extracted from the periodical "O Pirralho", and from the poetry collectanea "La Divina Increnca", and constitute part of the Juó Bananére's work, the pseudonym of Alexandre Ribeiro Marcondes Machado (1982-1933).The revolutionary ideas of the vanguard artists allowed the linguistic environment of these expressions, that were confined to the oral language and rejected by the belle époque literature, to be published as well as to confer a historical and documental value to Bananére's writings, especially when considering the sparing oral registers from the epoch under study. Currently, these data represent an essential source to the reconstruction of the Brazilian Portuguese of the beginning of the twentieth century. The main objective of this paper is to date the colloquial expressions, which historical investigation is presently dispersed and scarce, therefore it may be possible an expansion of the diachronic analysis of the popular registers of the Portuguese.
