Abstract

Layouts obtained with multidimensional projection techniques provide the basis for different visualization metaphors applicable to several data types. The problem of creating a visual embedding from the layout that favours user interaction has been relatively little explored.Typical visual embeddings are point clouds arranged in the two-dimensional space, in which circles or dots represent an instance; or alternatively 2D graphs with vertices representing data instances and edges representing neighborhood relationships amongst them. The goal of this master's project is to investigate alternative metaphorsfor viewing projection layouts. We seek a interactive representations capable of providing a smooth transition across different levels of detail, departing from an overview representation of data groups until reaching relevant information at a local level, and capable of revealing meaningful relationships within subgroups of interest.
