Abstract

The knowledge of sugarcane root system consists of important agronomic information. For irrigation, this parameter is important for planning and water management in agricultural crops. Despite the agronomic importance, few studies about sugarcane root system were done. This fact is due to difficulties of evaluation techniques and the variability of results. The root scanner use consists in alternative to root system evaluation, allowing continuous study of roots throughout the plant cycle. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate root distribution and development of four sugarcane varieties, with two different leaves architecture using a root scanner. The root system evaluation will be in two years, with three replicates each: in the first, the root system will be evaluated in the crop lines, three times (April, July and September 2012); in the second step, it will be evaluated between the crop lines in April 2013. For the data analysis of each variety will be used descriptive statistics and also the Surfer® software for graphing the distribution of the root system.
