Evaluation and proposed re-structuring the epidemiological monitoring system for rabies dog to São Paulo State

Abstract

Rabies is a worldwide zoonosis with nearly 100% lethality in all species. In Brazil, there are a considerable number of human, domestic, livestock and wildlife animal cases which are all able to spread the disease. However, dog role has declined in recent year, mostly due to vaccination interventions recommended by the Ministry of Health. In São Paulo the situation is not different since the state rabies control program has sucessfully decreased the detection of canine variant of the virus. Although a change of rabies epidemiological scenario has been observed, no change on disease approach has been proposed. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to evaluate the Sao Paulo State epidemiological surveillance system of canine rabies, perform a risk analysis of the reintroduction of the canine variant of the virus in a scenario of suspension of the vaccination campaign and develop a proposal for surveillance for the same scenario. The evaluation of the surveillance system will be based on the guidelines proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States and analysis of risk of reintroduction of canine variant of rabies virus follow the methodology proposed by the World Organization for Animal Health. As the final goal we intend to provide a surveillance system which may accept vaccine suspension scenario considering the results of risk analysis. (AU)
