Abstract The soils of tropical and subtropical regions are usually acidic and have high levels of aluminum (Al). Al toxicity to plants is a result of the high affinity cationic Al with cell walls, membranes and metabolites. Al also changes the cellular homeostasis by altering the activity of membrane channels and the influx of ions, by binding to enzymes and other cellular components. The purpose of this project is to study the behavior of two varieties of tomato exposed to Al through the process of oxidative stress resulting from exposure to element. Using the parameters described throughout the methodology we can characterize the varieties of plants in relation to defense and tolerance mechanisms to Al toxicity. A pilot experiment will be conducted to define the Al concentrations by response surface and the further cultivation in the soil will help to elucidate the dynamic behavior of the element in soil-plant system, evaluating the influence of the soil matrix on the bioavailability of the element. | |
