Abstract

According to the increasing problems due water and soil contamination with Cadmium (Cd), new approaches are required to understand the mechanisms involved in plant tolerance exposed to this type of stress, with special focus in the root system, as a manner to reduce transport this metal to edible parts. Thus, this project aims to study the Cd tolerance mechanisms in tomato roots, using tolerant varieties as rootstocks. We hope explain the previously observed differences in tolerance, through the characterization of morpho-anatomical changes (internal and external) in the root tissues, and differences in Cd uptake to aerial parts of the plants. The expected results of this research are related to the identification of patterns in morphology and anatomy of roots, which could be associated with differences in levels of tolerance to Cd among genotypes. Considering that roots are the gateway to this metal in plants, we can elucidate the role of roots system in Cd tolerance, and study the reduction of fruit contamination by using tolerant rootstocks as "filters" for this metal uptake. Furthermore, the grafting approaches for such studies are very important, because this technique is widely used in tomato. Therefore, the identification of genotypes whose tolerance is linked to the mechanisms of the root system would have an immediate impact, through the recommendation of genotypes as parents in breeding programs. Finally, studies of tolerance to Cd of the root system can reveal new researches possibilities, generating theoretical and applied results that are relevant to this research line.
