Abstract

The gestational weight gain (GPG) is a complex phenomenon resulting from interactions between fetal growth and development, and changes in physiology and metabolism in maternal and placental metabolism. Excess weight can damage the baby's development and risk the health of the mother. Objective: evaluate the influence of socioeconomic factors, reproductive behavior and in weight gain during the pregnancy. Methods: this cohort study is part of the "Influence of nutritional factors and Urban Air Pollutants on Lung Health of Children: A cohort study of pregnant women in western São Paulo", funded by FAPESP (2009/17315-9). For this study the sample size of 220 pregnant women who will be the basic health units (BHU) located in the District Butantã in western Sao Paulo. The inclusion criteria for in the study were: singleton pregnancy, gestational age less than 13 weeks and no pre-existing maternal diseases. Data on socioeconomic status, reproductive and behavioral variables were collected by community health agents(CHA). Measurements of weight and height are measured at the Hospital das Clinicas in each trimester of pregnancy and from them will be calculated the body mass index (BMI) and weight gain weight will be evaluated according to IOM recommendations. Result Analysis: The effect of weight gain during pregnancy on the independent variables will be analyzed using multiple regression models. (AU)
