Abstract

The study of medicinal plants is vast and has increasingly attracted the attention of society, being an alternative source to the high cost of allopathic medicines. So for, medicinal plants are used safely, multidisciplinary analysis studies have become increasingly the subject of research in phytotherapics. The National Health Surveillance Agency has recently approved 71 medicinal plants for the use of the Brazilians, and one of these representatives, the species of the family Plantaginaceae (Plantago major). However, there is big controversy in traditional populations about the popular name of these species, since all commercial species of the genus Plantago are also called tanchagem. Leaf morphology of the species of this genus has very strong similarities between them, making it difficult to correct botanical identification. Therefore, this study aims to clarify controversies in the marketing of plants of the genus Plantago. This study will enable analysis of foliar secretory structures of four species of the genus (P. major, P. lanceolata, P. australis and P. tomentosa), which will be analyzed by classical light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, work will provide a chemical profile by mass spectrometry, using a solvent extraction by default, therefore, liable to comparisons. Thus, the species of leaf analysis is performed by determining the biometrics tissue cross-sections through the leaf surface analysis by quantifying epidermal trichomes and stomatal, confirmed by statistical tests and chemical analysis, which consists of the four species gender as used in folk medicine.(AU)
