Abstract

Demographic and global climate changes and the fact that 20% of people living in extreme poverty without basic sanitation and education associated hunger and malnutrition created a scenario with conditions for the constant emergence of new forms of expression of disease. The different species of Leishmania genus are the most important emerging parasitic diseases. In New and Old world the Visceral leishmaniasis is an zoonosis and the wild and domestic canids as important reservoirs. In Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, the environmental interference, the disordered population migration, linked to profound ecopidemiological changes and lack of basic infrastructure has contributed to the urbanization of the vector and outbreaks. However, despite this context, there are few studies with the objective of knowing or determining epidemiological factors associated with infection and phylogenetic studies for Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi in distinct ecoregions in Maranhão. This project main objective, knowledge of the real situation of canine visceral leishmaniasis in wild and domestic animals in Maranhão State through the isolation, characterization and molecular phylogenetic studies with tradicional markers for the group and serological studies.
