Abstract

In spite of decline, dental caries continues to be the most prevalent disease in children and tooth pain one of its major consequences. However, there are few studies about life time prevalence of tooth pain and their determinants in the literature. The objetive of this study is to estimate the life-time prevalence of tooth pain in the follow up (2004/5) of live birth cohort of Ribeirão Preto (1994) and São Luis (1997). Methods: the study population consisted of 1/3 of the original live birth cohorts from Ribeirão Preto (SP) and São Luis (MA)when children were respectively with 10/11 (n= 666) and 7/9 11 years old (n= 808). The outcome was defined as life time tooth pain due to dental caries experience reported by parents or gurdians. Analysis will include family, mothers and children related covariants. Bivariate analysis will be followed by stratified and multivariable analysis in a hierarchical form. Final model will include significant variables ( (p <0.10) and those known confounders and determinants of dental pain. Models will be constructed using generalized estimation equation using SAS and SUDAAN calable, to estimate Prevalence Ratios and to take into consideration oversample and stratified sample used in this study.
