Abstract

Many personal care such as bathing, feeding, brushing teeth..., of elderly residents in long-term care institutions (LTCI) are delegated to others (caregivers), which should have knowledge on how best to deal with these everyday situations. Studies show a direct relationship between good oral health and general health, which indicated that oral hygiene care should not be overlooked. Thus, the objective of this study will be evaluate the changes in the quality of oral hygiene of LTCI elderly residents after a training program with their caregivers. Initially (T0), elderly residents of LTCI (n±50) will have their socio-demographic data recorded in a form. Their quality of oral hygiene will be evaluated by means of a daily habits questionnaire and physical examinations, in which the plaque index will be measure according to the method of Quigley and Hein (1962). The number of remaining teeth, wearing dentures and mucosal color will be evaluated and noted in specific form. The caregivers (n±30) will be invited to answer a questionnaire on their basic knowledge about oral health. After this first step, a training program in oral health will be applied to careers, carrying out demonstration of oral hygiene techniques, delivery of explanatory brochures and lectures on hygiene. The same evaluations carried on T0 will be repeated six months after the training program (T1) of the caregivers. To assess possible changes in the oral hygiene of the elderly, the data obtained at T0 and T1 will be compared using more appropriate statistical tests.(AU)
