Abstract

The analysis of recent literature points to high rates of depression, burnout and mental health problems among medical residents, suggesting the need to identify risk and protective factors for such problems. This study aims to investigate possible associations between manifestations of burnout, depression indicators and social skills in medical residents of clinical and surgical areas. The study will use a convenience sample of 100 medical residents of both sexes, from different years of training, of clinical and surgical areas. The following self-applied instruments will be used: Inventário da Síndrome de Burnout, Well - Being Index 5 (WHO-5), Inventário de Habilidades Sociais and another questionnaire regarding characteristics of professional activities and demographic data. The instruments will be encoded according to technical standards and after verification of sample normality, there will be the choice of tests to check for correlations between variables and comparisons between groups. Values of p<0,05 will be considered statistically significant in all tests. The study has hypothesized that in professional practice of medical residents, the presence of manifestations of burnout and depression can be negatively associated with the presence of social skills, which can act as a protective factor for these conditions. It is intended that this study contributes to the systematization of data that can assist in proposing prevent measures regarding mental health of medical residents in training.
