Abstract

The knowledge on Devonian invertebrates from Brazil back the period between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, when pioneering expeditions to the main Brazilian Paleozoic basins - Paraná, Parnaíba and Amazonas basins - were made. This epoch also rendered important surveys (e.g. Clarke, 1913), still used today. Among the trilobites, the most representatives are the Homalonotidae and Calmoniidae, whose importance in paleoenvironmental and paleobiogeographic questions has been confirmed through recent systematic revisions in Paraná Basin fossils. These studies also demonstrate that taphonomic modifications must be taken into account in taxonomic analyses to avoid misinterpretations. The current work will revise the systematics of Homalonotidae and Calmoniidae trilobites from the Parnaíba and Amazonas basins, thus allowing more accurate paleobiogeographic correlations between these faunas and those from other localities within the Malvinokaffric Realm, like Bolivia (Icla, Belén and Sica Sica formations), South Africa (Gydo Formaion, Bokkeveld Group, Karoo Basin), and Falkland Islands (Fox Bay Formation).
