An in vitro assessment of marginal adaptation of different restorative materials suitable for cervical lesions submitted to thermal, mechanical and cariogenic challenges

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro the marginal adaptation of class V restorations performed with different restorative materials (conventional GIC - Ketac Molar®; modified GIC - Vitremer and Ketac N100®, and resin - Z350®) before and after the thermal, mechanical and cariogenic challenges. For this, the sample will consist of 80 bovine teeth which will be randomly distributed in four experimental groups (n=20) and they will be subdivided into two groups (n=10). The teeth will be cleaned with pumice and water and standardized class V cavities (2 mm length x 4 mm wide x 1.5 mm depth) shall be prepared on the buccal surface of each tooth, using a machine connected a diamond burs (#1091) at high speed refrigerated. The margins will be set in enamel (occlusal margin) and dentin (gingival margin). After preparation of the cavities, they will be randomly restored with one of four restorative materials under study: G1 - Ketac Molar® (3M/ESPE), G2 - Vitremer® (3M/ESPE), G3 - Ketac N100® (3M/ESPE) G4 - Filtek Z350® (3M/ESPE). The materials will be handled and inserted into the cavities according to the manufacturer's recommendations. After 24 hours, replicas of the restored samples will be made using vinyl polysiloxane and epoxy resin. Then the samples will be subjected to thermal (20,000 cycles of 30 s), mechanical (200,000 cycles with a load of 30 N and frequency of 2Hz) and cariogenic (14 days of pH cycling) challenges. New replicas will be made after the challenges and the samples will be analyzed in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for observation and measurement of cracks formed (in percentage). The results will be submitted to appropriate statistical tests considering a significance level of 5%.
