Abstract

Plant origin natural products have an incredible potential in terms of diversity of chemical structures and biological properties. Thus, plants represent a promising molecular diversity source in the search for selective enzyme inhibitors. The brazilian flora biodiversity has great potential for discovery of new substances with biological activity, but is not yet scientifically well known. Considered to be the biodiversity richest savanna in the world, brazilian Cerrado biome represents a promising source of biologically active substances. Bowdichia virgilioides (Fabaceae), popularly known as sucupira preta, is a species used in folk medicine for treatment of various diseases, and is a plant which holds great pharmacological potential, making it an important target in the search for bioactive substances. The lysosomal cysteine peptidases represent an important therapeutic target, being involved in several physiological processes, beyond being related to different pathologies. This project proposes the phytochemical study of the Bowdichia virgilioides species, known by its enshrined use in folk medicine and by its abundance in diversity of secondary metabolites. Through a bioguided study of extracts and fractions from B. virgilioides, this study aims to search for specific inhibitors of cathepsins K, L and V that may contribute to the design of prototypes for new drugs.
