Abstract

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease whose spectral types range from a single lesion with spontaneous healing, through multiple lesions and mucosal involvement. In Brazil there are seven species that cause ATL, six of these belong to the subgenus L. (Viannia) and one to the L. (Leishmania)subgenus. The LTA has registered in all Brazilian states, however, the Amazon region presents a complex scenario due to the existence of a diversity of Leishmania species, insect vectors and reservoirs of the disease. The state of Pará has 41% of reported cases in the North. The Santarém region accounts for 5% of all cases in this state and have been recorded on five of the main species that cause ATL. The identification of strains of Leishmania in this region by the use of diagnostic tools commonly used, does not always conclusive. This study will aim at biological and molecular characterization of strains of Leishmania isolated from patients with ATL in the Amazon region of Pará state, in order thus to contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of ACL in this region. The biological characterization will be based on the behavior of the parasite in susceptible mice. Then there will be a molecular characterization, determining the profile of the chromosomes of each strain (molecular karyotyping) and analysis of marker sequences in each of the strains, comparing the results obtained with strains reference.
