Abstract

The genus Pristimantis (Amphibia, Anura, Craugastoridae) includes 439 species of frogs distributed through northwestern South America, and particularly concentrated in the Andes. The genus is currently divided in 16 species groups, with 34 species unassigned to any of them. One recent molecular phylogenetic analysis including about 20% of all known species showed that most of these species groups are not monophyletic. Nevertheless there was no rearrangement of the infrageneric taxonomy due to the lack of morphological data. The goal of the present study is to present a phylogenetic analysis of Pristimantis based on phenotypic characters of diverse character systems (e.g., external morphology, myology, osteology) and genotypic characters. Exemplar species of other genera of Craugastoridae will be used as outgroups. It is expect that our results would allow to present a taxonomic review of the genus, including morphological diagnostic characters, which, besides providing an overview of the morphological diversity of Pristimantis, would greatly facilitate the taxonomic research on this difficult group of frogs; Finally, our results will allow us to study the evolution of several the phenotypic character systems in the group, contributing to the knowledge of morphological evolution in Terrarana.
