Abstract

The genus Oreobates has faced a big change in its composition since its removal from the synonym of Ischnocnema. Most decisions regarding the taxonomy of the genus have been taken considering only molecular data and little effort has been made to revert the lack of morphological data in the study of the genus. Even though the group presents an interesting morphological variation, no morphological character has been included in a phylogenetic analysis of the genus and synapomorphies for the group are yet to be found. Besides presenting a diversity of forms, Oreobates species also have an interesting distribution to test Biogeographical hypotheses, as they are widely distributed in South America across a disparate and diverse array of habitats. Hence, Oreobates can be considered an ideal group for studies in systematic, morphological evolution, and biogeography, and, therefore, was selected as the target of this project. The purposes of this project include (I) to infer phylogenetic relationships of Oreobates species under total evidence approach, (II) to investigate how the morphology of the species are related to the habitat they occupy, and (III) understand the evolutionary history of the genus (biogeography). The methods that will be used include phylogenetic analyses under two different optimization criteria (Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Phylogenetic Generalized Least Squares (PGLS), Ancestral Area Reconstruction, and Dispersal-Vicariance Analyses.
