Abstract

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used in biomedical applications, namely in dental and orthopedic implants.Nanotechnology applying surface functionalization techniques has been recently used in dental implants surfaces. In this project surface modification techniques will be used on titanium, the biomaterial commonly used in dental implants, in order to fulfil, simultaneously, the following requirements: induce an increased osseoconductivity, avoid microbial colonization, superior corrosion and wear performance (tribocorrosion). Nanostructured surfaces will be produced on commercial pure Ti after several functionalization techniques. The main aim of this project is to understand the signalling transduction mechanisms associated with adhesion of osteoblasts to the diferente functionalized titanium surfaces. Also kinases and micro RNAs will be evaluated. This project is expected to decisively contribute to the fundamental knowledge on the effect of surface properties on the biological interaction with materials. This will help the multifunctional surface that could be applied on denta choosing l implants, contributing for the increase of the lifetime of dental implants and patient healthcare and confort.
