Fossildiagenesis of Devonian infaunal lingulids, Paraná Basin, Brazil: taxonomic and paleoecologic implications

Abstract

Recent studies on infaunal lingulides have provided important information about paleoenvironmental conditions and several other events related to the formation of Paraná Basin Devonian fossiliferous deposits. Previous studies on lingulides focused mainly on biostratinomic data and in the association of fossil and sequence stratigraphy data. Therefore, lingulide fossildiagenetic studies are rare, but they are important mainly because they can clarify different aspects related to fossil preservation pathways, probably linked to paleoenvironmental sedimentary chemistry and to extant lingulids (Lingula and Glottidia), not yet completely understood. This research will analyze fossil lingulids with RAMAN spectroscopy analysis, an innovative technique when applied to fossils; MEV-EDS, a more common method of chemical and morphological analysis will also be applied. The main aims of this project are: a) to recognize different types of lingulide preservation and to provide the pathways that lead to each type; b) to define the role of fossilization process in the modification of lingulide morphology (genera and species); c) to amplify the knowledge of diagenetic effects, preservation types and taxonomy, using innovative techniques for Paleozoic fossils; d) to recognize the impact of the taxonomic data obtained, and to define number of lingulide genera and species preserved; e) to compare the results with samples of extant lingulides with the aim to determine shell biomineralization differences and implications for the fossil record. The use of innovative techniques, readily available on the institution (IGc/USP, among others), and the importance of knowing the fossildiagenetic pathways of this Phanerozoic fossil group are the main arguments in favor of the present project execution.
