Abstract

The global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas (GHG) has increased significantly over time as a result of human activities. The increase in CO2 causes several changes in vital processes of plants with C3 and C4 metabolism, such as photosynthesis and respiration. Based on isotopic analysis of carbon and nitrogen plant, soil and air, which allows to investigate the dynamics of its flow in an ecosystem, this study may help to understand the physiology of tropical plant species and provide forecasts for the possible rearrangements of the flora that should occur due to climate change. It is expected that the first study on the adaptation of a C4 grass (Panicum maximum) and a C3 legume (Stylosanthes capitata) growing consortium and under conditions of atmospheric CO2 enrichment (face systems - free air carbon dioxide enrichment) will be useful regarding the possible role of forage plants as a sink of CO2 in the tropical region. This project is linked to FAPESP Regular Master Fellowship (2012/03439-0) and to FAPESP Thematic Project (No. 2008/58075-8) under the coordination of Prof. Carlos Alberto Martinez y Huaman and is also linked to the Masters Project "Effects of elevated CO2 concentration on dynamics of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in two tropical forages (Panicum maximum and Stylosanthes capitata) grown in the consortium," coordinated by Prof. Miquel Gonzalez-Meler, at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
