Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using canola oil as a source of fat, combined with the effects of the antioxidants selenium and vitamin E on performance, concentrations of selenium and glutathione peroxidase activity in Nellore cattle. For this purpose, will be used forty-eight Nellore, divided into four groups with 12 animals per treatment as described: Control (C): basal diet without additional supplementation of selenium, vitamin E or canola oil; Control + Antioxidants (C + A): basal diet supplemented with 2.5 mg Se/kg of DM in the form of organic selenium and 500UI of vitamin E/kg of DM; Control + Oil (C + O): basal diet supplemented with 3% of canola oil/kg of DM; Oil + Antioxidants (O + A): basal diet supplemented with 2,5 mg of Se/kg of DM in the form of organic selenium, 500UI of vitamin E and 3% of canola oil/kg of DM. The statistical design is of a completely randomized design with 12 replicates per treatment. Data will be analyzed by the SAS statistical package (SAS Institute Inc., 2000) using analysis of variance using PROC GLM and PROC MIXED. The averages are compared by means of contrasts with the 5% level of significance. (AU)
