Abstract

From the landing of the Portuguese court in Brazil, in 1808, began in Rio de Janeiro an intense process of urbanization of the city and civilization of its inhabitants, whose references were the patterns of modernization, progress and sociability arising from illustrated ideals, mainly French and English. This process was responsible, roughly, by changing the social landscape arising from colonial times, especially countrified, replacing it with a social experience composed of elements increasingly urbans. Although such changes have been promoted by various institutions and actors, the literate occupied a more prominent roles because they understood that the written culture, especially the beautiful letters, had a duty to spread the lights and civilization. Of written genres, practitioners of the letters attributed to the journalism a place of fundamental instrument of civilization; for this purpose, such men of culture printed in newspapers and magazines a wide range of knowledge - literature, history, science, health, fashion, manners , morality, etc. - such knowledge which recommended to the people a new modus vivendi, with more urban characteristics, in order to build a more civilized reader, better able to contribute to the progress of Brazil. The proposed research aims to clarify that the pedagogical discourse constructed by literate in the pages of periodicals, especially those published between 1841 and 1870, at which time that the beautiful letters, considered a major factor civilization of literacy, gain widespread prominence in the newspapers and magazines, consolidating in Rio de Janeiro a press more literary. Thus, I intend to analyze what was "to be" civilized in nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro, identifying the requirements formulated by the literate that concerned to the body, morals and customs of the people, in order to evaluate the main features that should make up the ideal type of individual who wanted to build.
